Introduction to Fukuoka city
Fukuoka city is the gateway to Kyushu, the southernmost island of the four main Japanese islands that stretch from the south to the north. The city is its district's capital of government, economics and culture with a population of about 140 million. Being surrounded by resorts richly endowed in natural beauty such as Shikano island, Nokono island, and Umino nakamichi, it is a serene and open city. Owing to a location closer to Pusan or Seoul than to Tokyo, this city has long been an entry point for continental culture and is now developing rapidly as a hub for exchange between Asia and Japan, hosting many international flights to Asian countries in the Pacific region.
In older times, as a strong base for the production of steel and coal, Fukuoka played a big part in the industrialization of Japan. Nowadays, the city has seen renewed development focusing on the automobile and software industries, taking full advantage of Fukuoka International Airport, located only 10 minutes away from the city center.
In the suburbs, there are a lot of attractive places to visit such as Yanagawa city, replete with historic atmosphere and aquatic charm, the Space World amusement park, and Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, a place of worship for the god of learning Sugawara no Michizane. The area is full of appeal, endowed with several hot springs, abundant nature, and a pleasant warm climate.
