Hokkaido Food & Beverage

Being surrounded by both seas and an ocean wealthy in sea food, Hokkaido has witnessed the development of a distinctive food culture, thanks in a large part to the Ainu people, the island's original inhabitants. Sapporo is also the largest region for the consumption of seasonal foods, which are gathered from all over the island. Some examples of local Hokkaido specialties we highly recommend are: kaisen-don -- a bowl of rice topped with a heap of delicious sea food (shrimp, sashimi, ikura, salmon caviar or uni, and sea egg); jingis kan -- mutton or lamb barbecue grilled on a special pan; and Sapporo ramen -- yellowish curly noodles with various toppings in a rich soup seasoned with miso. There is abundant sea food in Hokkaido throughout the year as well as a constant harvest of fresh vegetables. Fresh and quality dairy products are provided by the farms that lie in the suburbs. Last but not least, being the birthplace of Japanese beer, there are factories and beer gardens for some of the major breweries, where you can throw back a beer any time you like.
