Hokkaido Prefecture, which has Sapporo at its center, has developed a unique culture influenced by the Ainu people, Hokkaido's native people. You can have a pleasant time in Sapporo at the various music events, festivals, and shows held in the city. Moreover, in Susukino, restaurants, bars, hotels, and any number of other amusement facilities are gathered together to form one of the three major nightlife centers of Japan. Sapporo has developed a large underground shopping mall with about 140 stores where you can comfortably enjoy shopping despite the cold climate. Additionally, with just a short trip you can luxuriate in the hot springs around the city. And if you drive northeast for two hours to Asahikawa, Hokkaido's second largest city, you can visit the Asahiyama Zoo, which boasts the highest number of visitors in Japan.
