Yogyakarta Entertainment

The entertainment scene in Indonesia is packed with arts and festival, dance culture, jazz and fashion.   In most countries, heritage and culture belong to museum and galleries however it is different in Indonesia where its ethnic groups are still living their original culture.   For instance, in Bali, ceremonies and processions are performed daily.

Theatre and dance is an integral part of Balinese culture.  The Kecak is an unusual Balinese dance that uses the chanting ‘monkey’ chorus echoed by the polyrhythic sounds that produces the name, “Ke-chak”.   The Javanese dance combines an exquisite and a beautiful art show in high-class quality. Performed by elegant dancers in colourful dresses, the ‘pendopo’ stage makes an incomparable art performance which reflects the movements of the Mataram Kingdom in the 8th and 10th century.

The jazz scene thrives in Indonesia with hundreds of international jazz performers and artists showcasing their talents and acts in The Jakarta Java International Jazz Festival.  But it is Indonesians who dominate the fashion scene from the likes of Iwan Tirta, Sebastian Gunawan and Harry Dharsono who have marked their reputation as established fashion designers.  Jakarta is filled with quality fashion shows weekly.

There is also the Bali Arts Festival which featurse handicraft exhibitions and cultural activities comprising Bali’s dance, music and other arts.
